Registration

Registration for the Doctoral Colloquium takes place at the same time as the registration for the main DGfS conference.

You don't have to register for the main conference if you only want to attend our workshop. If you want to participate (free of charge), please email sarah.warchhold(at)germanistik.uni-freiburg.de. I'll put you on our list and we’ll send around more detailed information (zoom link, timetable,..) shortly before the workshop.

If you want to attend the main conference (with a fee) as well, please fill in the respective registration form.

Workshop: Data wrangling & reproducible reports with tidyverse and R-Markdown

Have a messy dataset and don't want to spend hours editing it in Excel? Heard about the R "pipe" (%>%) but don't know how to use it? Seen colleagues write interactive R documents to easily replicate and share what they've done?

Tidyverse and R-Markdown are a classic combination of R packages that allow you to wrangle your unwieldy data into whatever shape you need, document your research in a reproducible way, and easily present professional results, all using intuitive syntax.

In this workshop, we will walk you through the fundamental uses of R-Markdown and tidyverse through the use of hands-on exercises, cumulating in a final mini "project" in which you will create your own report of sample data. By the end of the day, you will know how to combine tables, transform and create new columns in your dataframe, wrangle your data into the format you need for further analysis, do basic ggplot graphing, and tie it all together in a professional R-Markdown document that you can share with supervisors or keep for a reproducible record of your work.

The workshop will be a full-day event (9-5) on February 23, 2021, held online (via Zoom), with opportunities for networking and socializing. Women and gender minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Whether you’re just getting started with R or want to freshen up your R skills, tidyverse and R-Markdown are great additions to your toolset.
