Cost and funding opportunities

Each semester, all students from EU countries are required to pay a fee of approximately 180 €. Non-EU citizens pay 1,500 € (further information can be found here). These fees also subsidise travel on public transport, allowing students to obtain a public transport ticket valid for a whole semester at a reduced rate. More information about tuition fees can be found here.

All students in Germany must be covered by German health insurance. Shopfronts of AOK and TK are located in close proximity to the main campus of the University.

Currently, living costs in Freiburg are approximately 800 € per month, including rent and food. As Freiburg is a popular city, the cost of living tends to be higher than most other German cities. See below for more information about living in Freiburg.

Under certain conditions, applicants from abroad have the right to financial support through BAföG. Furthermore, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other institutions offer different funding programs (overview here).

Please note that the University of Freiburg itself does not offer scholarships. Scholarships can only be arranged with other funding institutions. General information about scholarships can be found here.
