The Master's degree program: Linguistik/Linguistics

At the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, General Linguistics can be studied as an academic discipline in the scope of the Master's programme Master of Arts in Linguistik/Linguistics.

The international, 4-semester long Master of Arts in Linguistik/Linguistics program is designed to train students in scientific competences with regard to language, across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. The program encompasses the present structure and usage of languages as well as their historic development and cognitive processing. It is jointly organized by a number of distinct institutes, which together form the Hermann Paul Centre for Linguistics (HPCL).

The research oriented M.A. program in Linguistik/Linguistics offers a wide range of theory-driven and data-focused courses from all fields of linguistics, with a focus on a wide range of both European and non-European languages. Due to the interdisciplinary approach of the program, students can choose from a diverse range of courses from the General Linguistics Department, as well as from the English, German, Romance, Scandinavian and Slavic Linguistics departments.

The program has a focus on linguistic typology, corpus linguistics and usage-based theories, as well as on linguistic interaction, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. Historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, language contact and language documentation are covered by numerous courses as well. The courses are predominately taught in German or English.

A feature of the M.A. program is that students are encouraged at a very early stage to participate in scientific talks, conferences and workshops. Students are also engaged in current research projects during their studies. Particularly qualified students may use the M.A. program to enter a PhD program. However, the M.A. program also prepares its graduates for entry into numerous career fields which require an analysis of language, texts or communication.
